چکیده

People infer traits from others' behavior, and use past behavior to guide future social decisions. However, the proposed mechanism underlying this process-generalizations from one behavior to another based on trait inferences-has not yet been fully demonstrated. Research in social psychology establishes people form trait inferences from observed behavior, while research in behavioral economics establishes prior behavior influences future decision-making. Here, we combine the literature in both fields to explore the entire process-trait inferences from prior behavior as generalizations that guide future decisions. We explore the generalization process using the primary person perception dimensionstrait warmth and trait competence. Across two studies, an initial group of participants (employees) play a competence based time estimation game and a warmth based charity donations game. A second group of participants (employers) then viewed the behavior of the first group of participants before deciding whether to invest with them in a trust game (warmth) and rock guessing game (competence). This task structure allows for employers to form trait inferences of warmth and competence from prior behavior and test whether these inferences generalize to an unrelated decision-making task.We found thatwhilewarmth behavior led to trait inferences that guided future decisions in both trait domains, competence behavior led to trait inferences that guided future decisions in just the competence domain. These results demonstrate that people do make generalizations from prior behavior that guide future decisions, and suggests a dissociation when generalizing within warmth and competence domains.

Exploring the Generalization Process from Past Behavior to Predicting Future Behavior

Substantial evidence in social psychology documents that traits predict behavior. Research in behavioral economics establishes prior behavioral information—the actual behavior of another person in the past—influences future decision making, suggestive of the role of traits in guiding future behavior, but agnostic to the specific psychological mechanism. Yet the entire generalization process fro...

Do core interpersonal and affective traits of PCL-R psychopathy interact with antisocial behavior and disinhibition to predict violence?

The utility of psychopathy measures in predicting violence is largely explained by their assessment of social deviance (e.g., antisocial behavior; disinhibition). A key question is whether social deviance interacts with the core interpersonal-affective traits of psychopathy to predict violence. Do core psychopathic traits multiply the (already high) risk of violence among disinhibited individua...

Social behavior, chemical communication, and adult neurogenesis: studies of scent mark function in Podarcis wall lizards.

Lacertid lizards have been hailed as a model system for the study of reptilian chemical communication. However, results obtained with the genus Podarcis, a diverse group of wall lizards with complex systematics, challenge emerging paradigms and caution against hasty generalizations. Here we review the available evidence on the role of chemical stimuli in male-female and male-male interactions i...

Prediction of attitude toward extramarital relationships based on impulsivity and personality traits

Impulsivity is the fundamental aspect of human behavior that has been reflected in principal theories of personality in concepts of traits and sub-traits and considered as a different structure in every person. The aim of this study was to predict the attitude toward infidelity based on impulsivity and personality traits. The research method was correlational. The study population consisted of ...

Culture and intelligence.

Intelligence cannot be fully or even meaningfully understood outside its cultural context. Work that seeks to study intelligence acontextually risks the imposition of an investigator's view of the world on the rest of the world. Moreover, work on intelligence within a single culture mayfail to do justice to the range of skills and knowledge that may constitute intelligence broadly defined and r...
